Modern Shabu House: Chic Hotpot Spot in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun

Modern Shabu House: A Must-Try Hotpot Spot in Gwanghwamun

When it comes to meeting up in Gwanghwamun, my first thought is always D Tower. Over the years, I’ve yet to have a disappointing meal at any of its restaurants. Naturally, when my latest plans brought me to Gwanghwamun, I immediately started scouting D Tower’s lineup of hot spots.

And this time, my heart (and appetite) landed on Modern Shabu House.

First Impressions

Even on a weekday evening, there was a wait—definitely a good sign. Luckily, we didn’t wait too long, but the popularity had already cranked my expectations sky-high. Spoiler: It didn’t disappoint.

The vibe? Less “traditional shabu-shabu joint” and more chic, modern restaurant. The star of the entrance? A luxurious all-you-can-eat veggie bar. Yep, it looked as good as it sounds.

Although we didn’t score a table by the window this time, the seats overlooking the Gwanghwamun nightscape are officially on my bucket list for the next visit.

What We Ordered

Each table had a sleek tablet menu (love the tech upgrade!) and helpful staff to walk us through the options. We went big with the Premium Course (₩140,000 per person).

The coolest twist? You choose one of six broths for your shabu-shabu. Naturally, we went for the house-favorite mushroom broth, which came with a matching main dish: truffle risotto.

The Meal

Before the broth arrived, we hit the veggie bar, which had everything you’d ever want for hotpot. A heads-up: They bring a starter set to your table, so don’t go overboard like we did. Our table was already overflowing with greens before the meal even started! 😂

The Premium Course includes:

4 Types of Meat: 2 beef cuts and 2 pork cuts (and yes, it’s unlimited).
Mushroom Broth: Flavorful, light, and perfect for soaking up all the veggie goodness.
Truffle Risotto: A surprisingly delicious finale. I wasn’t expecting much, but it was a standout.

The dipping sauces? Game-changers. You can mix your own from a variety of options. I made an absolute masterpiece and ate like a hotpot pro.

What Stood Out

Mushroom Broth & Truffle Risotto Combo
If you visit, this pairing is non-negotiable. The broth was rich yet subtle, and the risotto was creamy, aromatic, and perfectly balanced.

The Atmosphere
Modern, clean, and surprisingly quiet, even with a full house. It’s ideal for relaxed conversations and enjoying the food without distractions.

The Service
Shoutout to the incredible staff! From detailed menu explanations to their friendly, attentive care, they made the experience feel extra special.

Final Thoughts

Modern Shabu House combines a refined vibe with exceptional flavors, making it one of Gwanghwamun’s top dining spots.

Next time? I’m booking a window seat to soak in the night view while enjoying that mushroom broth and truffle risotto all over again.
